Food

The Council is working in partnership with the City of London to support the relocation of the capital’s historic food wholesale markets to Dagenham Dock.

The markets will bring new jobs, businesses and apprenticeships to the borough and provide high-quality fresh produce from the UK, Europe and beyond for independent convenience stores, cafes, caterers and other food businesses in the borough and across London.

And we have secured funding from the City and other partners to deliver community benefits now, even before the markets arrive, by:

  • Improving food education and catering in local schools
  • Enabling access to good jobs and careers in food through a new borough food school
  • Supporting a better local food offer through new business support and space for local food enterprises and entrepreneurs
  • Supporting residents and community organisations with skills, resources and infrastructure to grow, cook and share affordable, healthy and sustainable food.
