Barking and Dagenham Council believes that local authorities have an important role to play in shaping their local economies. This section of the website provides information about how we are helping to create more good jobs for local residents in key growth sectors, supporting local businesses to grow, and making sure our suppliers and partners support a healthier, more resilient and greener borough for all.

The borough’s land, location and connections to Central London, as well as our young, diverse and increasingly educated population,  create lots of opportunities.

In recent years we have secured new film studios, science and technology businesses and the relocation of the City of London’s historic food wholesale markets to Dagenham – and created new modern industrial and office space in Barking.

We supported organisations in the everyday economy to weather the pandemic.

And we are using our planning, procurement and convening powers to ensure that major suppliers and developers in the borough support our vision for a more inclusive economy that creates jobs and other benefits for local people.
