Film
The Council’s film locations service, Film Barking and Dagenham, has been building Barking and Dagenham’s reputation as a filming destination for over a decade. With demand growing, in 2021 the borough sought a partner to establish new permanent film studios on council-owned land at Dagenham East.
The subsequent development deal between Barking and Dagenham Council and Hackman Capital Partners/MBS Studios will establish London’s largest new film studios for 25 years.
Make It Here programme
The deal also secured an endowment from the studios to create our Make It Here programme, providing structured pathways to support local people to access employment, training and supply chain opportunities linked to local film activity.
The programme is developing:
- Work-related learning and careers activities in schools to attract new and diverse entrants to a wide range of screen industry careers
- Accessible and structured training and employment pathways into screen industry careers for local people
- A database of local crew, suppliers and facilities to retain more investment from the studios and visiting productions in the local economy.
