Construction
Barking & Dagenham’s Borough Manifesto set out plans to deliver more than 50,000 new homes and 20,000 new jobs by 2038.
As well as bringing new affordable homes and businesses to the borough, this development activity is creating hundreds of local jobs, apprenticeships and supply chain opportunities in construction each year.
In 2020, Barking and Dagenham became the first London borough to sign Unite the Union’s Construction Charter, committing to ensure all staff on our construction sites are paid at least the London Living Wage. By 2023, our local house-building programme had employed over 400 borough residents, including 100 apprentices. And we are using our planning powers to ensure major private developments in the borough also invest in the local economy and generate opportunities for residents.

School programmes – Construction
We work with local schools and colleges to build understanding and interest among local young people in careers in construction and the built environment – building the next pipeline of diverse talent for the sector.
Employment and training –Construction
The council is supporting the local economy by ensuring more of the goods and services we buy come from businesses based in and around the borough, and asking our major contractors to do the same.
Information for contractors
The Council requires all major commercial and residential developments in the borough to provide local employment, training and supply chain benefits during their construction phase. Commercial developments are also required to support local employment once operational.
