The third annual Barking and Dagenham Business Conference saw over 70 local entrepreneurs, business leaders and council partners come together for networking and updates from the council.
Items for discussion included support for local businesses, employment support and progress on the council’s Inclusive Growth strategy.
The Leader of the Council, Cllr Dominic Twomey, gave a presentation on the council’s proposed Budget for 2025/26 and highlighted growth in the local economy.
Cllr Sade Bright, Cabinet Member for Employment Skills and Aspiration, said: “The Barking and Dagenham Business Conference grows year-on-year and has become a vital cornerstone in the local business calendar.
“It’s a great place for local businesses, the heart of our economy, to come together and discuss ideas, give us feedback and get the important advice and support they need to thrive.”
Also discussed were updates on council programmes designed to support local businesses.
Over the past year, the Council’s Amplify business support programme supported 122 local businesses, including sector-specific support in food and care. As a result, 61 businesses reported improved access to markets and innovation in products and services. The council also convened a series of Meet the Buyer events to create construction supply-chain opportunities for local SMEs.
The council’s in house job brokerage service B&D Works and partnership with local employers, has supported over 10,000 residents into work, helping people to secure jobs, upskill and keeping talent local in the borough.
The conference also marked the official launch of the Trailblazer programme which is designed to help residents start businesses or become self-employed, offering one-to-one guidance, hands-on workshops to build confidence and skills, and grants to support early-stage set‑up.
Businesses and residents wanting to stay up to date on the latest business developments are encouraged to subscribe to the Business Forum newsletter.
The conference featured contributions from CU London, Federation of Small Businesses (FSB); Good Food Partnership; Adam Knights & Associates and Grow London Local.
