A careers workshop was held at the Adult College in Barking and Dagenham that brought together around 40 residents to explore opportunities within the technology sector and challenge common misconceptions about entering the industry. The session focused on non-traditional career pathways, highlighting how individuals can build successful careers in tech without necessarily holding a degree.
Speakers from Solid Rock Consulting and the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Customer Contact Team shared their own career journeys, demonstrating how many professionals start in entry-level positions and develop their skills, experience, and confidence over time. Learners heard about a range of accessible routes into the sector, including apprenticeships, workplace training, certifications, and customer service roles that can provide valuable foundations for progression into technical and specialist positions.
The workshop encouraged participants to consider the transferable skills they already possess and provided practical insights into the diverse career opportunities available within the tech industry. Attendees left with a greater understanding of how to take their first steps into the sector and build long-term, rewarding careers.
