Independent Visitor

The Independent Visitor (I.V) service provides a befriending and mentoring scheme for looked after children from aged 10 up to the age of 18 years.

The I.Vs are all volunteers.  Children who would like this service are referred by their allocated social worker and matched with an I.V by the Children’s Rights Officer.

I.Vs meet their matched child six times a year (one day in each of the school holidays or whenever suits the volunteer ) and engage in undertaking a positive activity to help build confidence and self-esteem. Activities might include:

–       Befriending

–       Accompanying their child to leisure activities that they are interested in (e.g. bowling; cinema; a sport).

–       Trying new activities together

–       Sharing experiences

–       Spend quality time together

The scheme offers thorough training and ongoing support.  Trips may go outside the borough, so volunteers will sometimes need to travel.  All expenses are paid for by the Local Authority.
